Drawing a Bunny Step by Step

This tutorial is about how to easily draw a bunny, and of course, it is suitable for artists of any capability. You do not have to be an expert in order to achieve this easy bunny drawing. You will be able to use this tutorial using the art medium of your preference – even an electronic drawing tablet. Learning how to draw a bunny can be intimidating, and features like its long ears, little nose, and thumping feet can make an easy bunny drawing wishful thinking, but it is not! Keep reading and follow the instructions to learn how to draw a bunny step by step.

Step 1: Constructing the Bunny’s Body

If you have attempted any of our other drawing tutorials you will know by now that the most common shape that is used first in the construction part of your drawing is an oval. We use construction lines and shapes to make sure that we get the right proportions for your rabbit drawing. If you want to learn how to draw a bunny easy, your first step is a horizontal oval. Ensure that there is space all around the oval for the additional construction shapes that are for the head, limbs, and ears of your bunny.

Step 2: Constructing the Bunny’s Head

The second step in this tutorial on how to draw a bunny step-by-step, is another oval, this time it is for the head of the bunny. This oval should be on the right-hand side of the body’s construction oval, and it should be more slanted, with the right-hand side of the head’s oval pointing downwards. See our example below as a reference.

Step 3: Constructing the Bunny’s Ears

The ears of a bunny are probably the most iconic thing about them, maybe because they are sleek and always aware. For this easy bunny drawing, the required construction shapes for the bunny’s ears are two ovals, but the one is bigger than the other because this rabbit is being seen from the side profile. The second ear is hidden behind its body and further away so it will be a bit smaller. The first oval should be more narrow and elongated than the other two ovals, but much smaller., and it should stand pretty much vertical.

Now for ear number two! You will notice that the oval for the second ear is a bit smaller. This is obvious because that ear is further back than the other ear. This oval should cross over the first oval by about halfway.

Step 4: Constructing the Bunny’s Back Legs

When looking at the structure of a rabbit, you will notice that it bears resemblance to other animals you have drawn (hopefully using one of our awesome tutorials!). The back legs of a bunny are quite similar to a cat because its fur and skin tend to bunch together and it makes it hard to define where the leg is exactly – particularly when they sit in certain positions. In order to draw a bunny easily, you must draw yet another oval for its construction, but this one should be much more rounded than the body’s construction oval. It should sit at the bottom of the left-hand side of it.

Step 5: Constructing the Bunny’s Front Feet

Just like with the ears of the rabbit drawing, the front foot that is closer to you in the picture will be slightly bigger than the second front foot of the rabbit. The first food requires some construction lines that start from right in the middle of the bottom line of the body’s construction oval, only slightly on the inside. It should come out underneath the body’s oval and curve to the right, and U-turn back towards the body.

The second foot should resemble the first. But, remember it should be smaller as it is slightly further away. It should sit nicely above the first foot, and no crossing over the body’s lines is necessary.

Step 6: Outlining the Eye

Have you ever looked deeply into a rabbit’s eyes? It is quite a daunting thing to be honest, they are so black that they seem blank, but there is actually a world of possibilities, just like in ours. For this tutorial on how to draw a bunny, the eye will need a much smaller circle as the construction shape. This little circle should be right in the center of the head’s construction oval

Step 7: Outlining the Bunny’s Body

This is the step where you will finally start to see the rabbit in and amongst the shapes and lines you have drawn during the construction phase of your bunny drawing tutorial. In order to draw a bunny, the outline will follow the edges of the construction shapes that you have drawn. The outline can be a little wiggly, but not too much, this will help to show that the rabbit is covered in fur. It would look odd with a solid smooth line.

You can start from anywhere on the rabbit, but if you would like our advice, we began with the ears and got the hard part over first. The ears need to show that there are two ears and not just one, so the outline can start on the right-hand side of the first ear that is more in the front, but above the head. Follow the shape of the shapes, moving to the left from the ear, over then back, around the back leg, shaping the front feet, and ending at the head’s oval shape.

To outline the head of your rabbit, you must start another line from the left-hand side of the head’s construction oval, just below where the bunny’s back begins. This line should slant slightly downwards, going towards the right, following the shape of the oval. Keep following the outline around the second ear, and finish off by connecting with the front ear.

Step 8: Adding Details

The rabbit’s fur should be facing in the same direction unless you are drawing a disheveled rabbit, but this tutorial is on drawing a clean and cute little rabbit with a neat coat. The detailing for the fur consists of little lines that are slightly curvy, interspersed by some shorter lines that are just as curvy.

If you are struggling to get the direction that the fur should be growing from the above example picture, then see the one below this, the arrows will lead the way for the movement of your pencil. Pay attention to the way the arrows go when you get the rabbit’s face. The fur will curve around the eye, and down its cheek.

Step 9: Adding More Details and the First Layer of Color

The bunny that we are drawing is just like the first picture in this tutorial, which means the base color that we will be working with is a light brown, as in the example below. But, you can choose any color for your rabbit. We do suggest you follow the tutorial exactly if this is your first time drawing a rabbit. Try to avoid using too dark of a brown at first because it will make adding any detailing with highlights a tricky task. You can also use this step to color the eye in with black and leave some white spots for the reflections of the glassy eye.

Step 10: Highlighting Your Bunny

Considering the base color of your choice for your bunny, the highlights you will add are going to need to be a much lighter brown or beige. The highlights will add definition to the fur and the body contours of the rabbit, making it seem more realistic, and thus, more impressive. Start by choosing an angle for you light source and apply the highlights where light would fall on your bunny.

If you look at the example below this instruction as an example, then you will see we favored the ears, around the eye, the front of its chest, and parts of its torso with the highlighting color.

Step 11: Last Highlights and Shadows

This step is where the real definition is added into the drawing of a rabbit you are busy creating. You will now need a much darker brown than the initial medium brown you used as the base color of your rabbit. The rabbit’s eye was highlighted all around, but less so on its lower part. You can add a shadow there for additional definition to the face. Not only that, but the ears, the bottom of the back leg, the front feet, and sections of the fur all require the addition of shadows.

Returning to the eye of your rabbit, you will want to get this part right as it is the most important feature if you are looking for realism. Eyes tend to bring life to your drawing, and they should not be taken lightly. Add more depth in the eye by deepening the darkness of the color they are filled with. Remember to leave the white spots blank as reflections.

Step 12: Erasing the Outline

You might be surprised by the step, but this is actually what makes your rabbit seems like a professional just drew it, even if it was your first time drawing a rabbit yourself. The outline is not necessary, and if you look at the example below, you will see what we mean.
